AS Degree: Two-year community and technical colleges as well as some four year colleges offer an Associate of Science degree.

Also called a transfer degree the AS degree provides a foundation of the basic courses students would take. While this degree is not a career training degree it can transfer to a four-year college or university. This degree contains most of the acceptable courses that a four year college or university will accept. Courses include math, science, history, humanities, English, social science and electives. The purpose of this degree is for transfer, but if that isn’t in the cards choose an area of study. Concentrate in areas like computer science, chemistry, engineering, health and more. Also getting this degree in a two-year environment is a money saver. Both degrees concentrate in the math and science fields. The difference is the main purpose of the degree. The associate of science degree can be used for finding work, but the main purpose of the degree is to transfer credits to a four year institution to continue education toward a bachelors. The main purpose of the associate of applied science degree is to provide training to prepare people for the work force in their chosen field. Very rarely is it used for transfer; most credits won’t transfer to a four year college/university.

The associate of science and associate of arts degrees have similar goals. Both are necessary to transfer into four year institutions to pursue a bachelor’s and both will transfer with ease. The difference is what the degree course curriculum. The associate of science degree focuses on math and science. This degree is recommended for anyone planning on majoring for a bachelor’s degree in the business, engineering or science fields. The associate of arts focuses on science, arts and humanities. Go after this degree if the bachelor’s degree you seek is in the arts, English or history fields.
